Dorothy was born Dora Wujda on February 7, 1933 in Fosston, Saskatchewan and raised on the family farm there. Her mother passed away when she was only seven and her sister Pearl substantially raised her and ensured she got her education. Soon after graduating high school in Yorkton, Dorothy took a clerk job at the Manitoba Telephone Company in Dauphin.
